New to Couponing? Here's Some Tips to Get You Started!

If you're new to couponing, it can be overwhelming. There is a lot to learn. From deciding which stores to focus on, to learning how to stack coupons, it can seem impossible to master. The easiest trick is to take it a step at a time and start small. Learn the ropes by doing a few mini-deals with the coupons you have on hand, and then branch into the bigger deals as you build your coupon stockpile.   

I love finding other sites that post deals and help to educate new couponers. One couponer/deal-seeker can't possibly find or post ALL of the great deals that are out there. ThriftyJinxy is one of those great sites that is a good one to subscribe to RSS feed or Facebook so you can catch the latest. From thrifty tips to rebates and giveaways, you'll find some deals at ThriftyJinxy.

Coupon Matchups--Do I have to do all that work myself?

If you've gotten into couponing, you know that the secret to scoring free and cheap stuff is to pair a sale with a coupon. Even better, pair a mfr. coupon, store coupon, and a rock-bottom sale.

In order to do this, some people have made a "price book." They go to their favorite stores and record the costs of all of their most commonly bought items, tracking when the sales dip, then pairing them with coupons. It's a lot of work, and since prices have been fluctuating a lot with the economy, it's sometimes inaccurate as well.

So, how do we do this without spending more time saving money than we do MAKING money? The good news is that many people have already taken the time to look over the "ad scans," (early looks at the upcoming ads for various stores) and matched them with available store and mfr. coupons. 

Here are some of the places I use the most for match-ups:

Find the one you like the best, and use them to plan your trips. They do the work for you, so you can spend your time customizing the deals you need for your family.

The All-Important Coupon Binder

When you get into couponing, you quickly realize you need an organization method. There are many--little coupon accordion organizer, envelopes, big accordion folder, or a binder. Each has its plusses and minuses.


I decided on a binder. I have a 3-ring zipper binder sorted by categories. I got the divider pages from the Krazy Coupon Lady here. I clip two inserts per week. I sometimes buy more inserts depending on what coupons will be coming. I use Sunday Coupon Preview to help me decide how many papers to buy. A general rule of thumb for me is: if I can save more that the cost of the paper within the first week, and expect to save 4-5 times the cost of the paper, I will buy 4-5 copies. I don't clip these inserts. I keep them in a gallon ziploc bag labeled with the week the insert was published.


Recently, I was at the Coupon Divas website and was listening to Kitty's video on coupon binders. She mentioned that she had found some pocket dividers that were especially good for coupons. Instead of the small baseball card holders (9 pockets), these are 3-pocket currency holders. They are as long as a 8 1/2 inch page, making them as long as the longest coupons. Yay! No folding! I just ordered some from Amazon:
